Nowadays many families are rarely having meals together. Why is this happening? Is this a positive or a negative development? IELTS | IELTS WRITING TASK-2

Nowadays many families are rarely having meals together. Why is this happening? Is this a positive or a negative development?

Indubitably, family has paramount significance in an individuals life.It is believed that in this ultra modern epoch, families having meal together has become a thing of the past. Apparently, modernisation and westernisation is to be blamed for this universal development. However, this is a destructive trend.

Fundamentally, the predominant factors that has evidently led to this can be observed. First and foremost, people have a hectic work schedule not only they have demanding work appointments  , but also due to their professional commitments they tend to live away from their household. To vindicate, according to BBC research it has been found that nearly 70 % of families in Japan have at least one individual who has to live away from family due to their jobs. Furthermore, unlike the bygone days, in this contemporary era, people are engrossed in social media so much people tend to destress themselves in front of television or on their phone rather than sitting and having meals with their families. Thus, the influx of technology and several  professional commitments are the prime reason for decreased family time.

Nevertheless, I find this trend negative for myriad reasons. Chiefly, Family mealtimes are a time to share news, give guidance and to make plans together. If families do not have meals together, they can not share their feelings and discuss any thoughts that are bothering them. To corroborate, according to Forbes magazine it has been found that families that have at least one meal together have better emotional understanding with each other. Furthermore, does this trend affect children’s development ? Certainly Yes, family bonds have always been the key instrument for passing on cultural values, knowledge and experience for children and also help children to have healthy foods rather than gorging on unhealthy food items.

To recapitulate, although  several reasons could be identified for the decline in shared family meals Yet we cannot ignore the overwhelming benefits of having meals together
