Nevertheless, a joint effort by governments and individuals can help control this menace.
Fundamentally, several reasons are associated with the rise in traffic congestion. Firstly, not only has the growing population increased the number of private vehicles on roads so that traffic volume exceeds road capacity, but also inadequate public transport systems force people to rely heavily on personal cars; therefore, traffic jams have become unavoidable in urban areas. For example, a BBC study found that cities with weak public transport infrastructure experience longer commuting hours.
