Some people think that parents should teach their children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the best place to learn this. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Answer

It is often argued that parents should be responsible for teaching children how to become responsible members of society, whereas others believe that schools are better equipped for this purpose. While both perspectives have some merit, I believe that parents should play the primary role, with schools reinforcing the values taught at home.

On the one hand, those who support the role of schools argue that educational institutions provide children with an ideal environment in which to develop social skills. At school, students interact with peers from different backgrounds and are required to follow rules, cooperate with others and resolve disagreements. This means that they can learn important qualities such as tolerance, respect and empathy through everyday interactions. For example, group projects require students to listen to different opinions, share responsibilities and work towards a common objective. Furthermore, schools can provide formal lessons about civic responsibility, environmental awareness and respect for the law. Therefore, it is understandable why some people regard schools as the most appropriate place for social education.

On the other hand, proponents of parental responsibility believe that children's character is primarily shaped within the family. One significant reason for this is that children begin developing their attitudes and behaviour long before they enter school. Parents can teach values such as honesty, kindness and responsibility through both direct guidance and their own behaviour. For instance, a child who regularly observes their parents helping others, respecting neighbours and taking responsibility for their mistakes is more likely to adopt similar habits. In addition, parents have the opportunity to reinforce these values consistently in everyday situations. From my perspective, this is the more convincing view because the foundations of a person's character are generally established at home, while schools mainly provide opportunities to practise and develop these qualities.

In conclusion, although schools offer valuable opportunities to develop social skills and civic awareness, parents have a more fundamental and lasting influence on children's character. I therefore believe that parents should take the primary responsibility, while schools should complement and strengthen the values taught at home.
