 Many small local shops are closing as they are unable to compete with large supermarkets in the area. How does this effect local communities? How could this situation be 

Indubitably, closure of local shops has become a burning issue. It is believed that due to the stiff competition from multifarious grocery stores various small level stores are shutting down. Apparently, it begets harrowing upshots on society. However, the joint efforts by government and individual can overcome this issue.

 Fundamentally, diminishing local shops entails myriad detrimental ramifications. First and foremost, not only it leads to economic decline but also lower job opportunities at an unprecedented scale. To corroborate, as per National Post, 70% of the local employment have reduced due to the loss in the shops within the local community. Secondly, unlike supermarkets which do not promote any social culture, local shops act as a hub for the community members to get along and build a social network. Thus, their closure could lead to a significant loss in the camaraderie. 

Nevertheless, there are potential ways to rectify the scenario. Chiefly, if there is more collaboration and partnership with the government and other local shops, there will be lower cost and higher chances of competition with the supermarkets. To substantiate, as per BBC report, there is a reduction of extra cost by 73% for the shops who have built partnerships within the community. Furthermore, does community support have any impact? Certainly, yes. Since, raising awareness amongst the residents to prioritize small shops over big markets could result in a considerable contribution for the increase in revenue.

 To recapitulate, local shops provide authenticity to the city and its culture and while local shops can flourish with the correct support, awareness, and strategic planning. Hence, it becomes a moral duty of individuals and government to help maintain the economic balance and preserve the true essence of the city.
