In some cities nowadays large shopping centre and supermarkets are open which are more popular than small local shops. Is this a negative or positive development?
Indubitably, Cities are transforming in various aspects, one of them is shopping pattern. It is often argued that supermarkets and shopping centres have gained admiration over the period of time and hence, replacing traditional businesses. However, it is constructive as well as destructive trend.
Apparently, growing of super markets and shopping complexes holds a wide range of constructive benefits. First and foremost, not only does it save an individual’s time to travel to different places for different products ,but also it is always possible to avoid bad weather as shopping malls have a covered roof. The fully air conditioned atmosphere inside most malls is an ideal way to escape the heat. To vindicate, according to BBC research, 25% of the public shifted to shop for the groceries or clothing from shopping centres due to the convenience of having everything under one roof. Secondly, unlike the bygone days when people used to buy simple and homemade articles, these days people are attracted towards the branded products which are easily available in malls. Seemingly, many companies offer deals just in their mall based stores. They are also are filled with eating options to suit any budget, like restaurants, diners, and food courts.
Nevertheless, it entails myriad detrimental ramifications. Chiefly, if the general public starts shifting towards the shops in the arcade, the local departmental shop would suffer from sale loss at an unprecedented scale. To corroborate, according to the BBC research 10% sale was marked down for the small business shops in Delhi after the introduction of these huge shopping centres. Furthermore, does the establishment of malls only affect the sales of the shops? Certainly no, it compels the business owner to cut down on employees and reduce the workforce. Hence, this leads to unemployment of the poor people.
To recapitulate, although introduction of malls and complexes have myriad constructive benefits yet the negative factors leading to loss of sale and unemployment could not be ignored.
