Many governments think that economic progress is their most important goal. Some people, however, think that other types of progress are equally important for a country. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
A multitude of meanings is attached to the idea of development; the term is complex, contested, ambiguous, and elusive. Nonetheless, in the simplest terms, development can be defined as bringing about social change that allows people to achieve their human potential. However, there are predominantly two contrasting views where a section of society vehemently believes that the economic development is substantial goal for the nation’s development, while other emphasize that other factors like education, health, agriculture are also equally indispensable for any nation.
Apparently, various factors make a section of people advocate that economic progress is of paramount significance for a country and have many reasons to substantiate it. First and foremost, economic development is taken not only a tool to rank the nations ,but also is a host of ostensible factor for a nation to make a global presence. To vindicate, according to Economic Times, India is ranked as the fastest growing economy across the globe which opens huge opportunities for international trade relations with other countries. Secondly, unlike the bygone days, in the modern era, many technology giants often look for fast developing economies to enter and establish their infrastructure at an unprecedented scale. Recently, Tesla and Apple took this opportunity to enter the Indian market and establish their production line. On top of that, economic progress creates the image of more reliable nation among other countries and global financial organizations.
Nevertheless, some believe that other types of development are fundamental for myriad reasons. Chiefly, food is the basic necessity of any society hence, agriculture is a key influencing factor. As published in the UNICEF report, there are many economies which are progressing fine but have very poor hunger index as majority of the nation does not have adequate and quality food. Furthermore, when trade and technology transfer is influenced by the economic development, it need a well educated and literate human resource to support it. According to the BBC, India is most preferred option for technology sector as majority of the educated people are engineers. Additionally, does modern equipment’s and well educated doctors who are capable to adapt with technology play a cardinal role in developing a nation in medical sector ? Certainly yes, advanced and affordable medicine such as in India, also promote medical tourism from developed economies.
In my profound opinion, although education, medicine and many other factors are important for any nation however, they all originate as a byproduct of the economic development of a country.
