Newspapers have influenced people's ideas and opinion. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or negative situation?

SAMPLE ANSWER : Print Media is known to be one of the oldest sources of information from many centuries. It is often said that newspapers have a significant effect on people’s thinking and opinions. Apparently, the long term trust and fewer other relevant sources can be a reason for this behavior. Nonetheless, It is a negative trend.

Fundamentally, the predominant factors that evidently trigger it can be observed. First and foremost is the level of confidence that newspapers have a made in the minds of the society. As newspapers have been there for years and people still rely on the newspapers for their daily dose of information about events taking place around the world. To illustrate, around 60% of the population in India, primarily in rural areas depend on Local newspapers for their daily knowledge of events. Secondly, newspaper corporations are autonomous entities who have complete dominance over the kind of news they print which apparently doesn’t leave the reader with much choice rather than reading those particular news which can have an impact on the way they think.

Nevertheless, I find this trend negative for multifarious reasons. Chiefly, the prime function of the news is to help people keep abreast of world events and current affairs but sadly news media has become an instrument of spreading propaganda of political parties. According to a survey by Cobra Post, 90% of the media houses were ready to sell a prominent page of a paper to spread news about local political leaders. Besides, It seems that we have entered an age of fake news and alternative facts where focus is concentrated on increasing the user engagement by publishing negative and crime stories rather than briefing the people about the happenings around them. Additionally, newspapers often engage in biased stories which affect the society’s perspective and spread hate among the communities which indirectly benefits the viewership of their content.

To conclude, the invention of newspapers has brought a boon to the people who have been able to learn about the affairs and events taking place in various parts of the world, especially in the last 100 years. Although, nowadays the media has been known to be biased and involved in printing stories to please the political strongholds but this type of behavior can lead to detrimental effects on the society and disturb the peace and harmony of a nation.
