There is an increasing number of serious crimes committed each
year. While some people say that the best way would be to use the death penalty
as a deterrent, many say that other measures would be needed. Discuss both
sides and opine.
SAMPLE ANSWER : The cases of serious offences are
increasing ever year owing to lacks in the legal system. However, there are
predominantly two contrasting views regarding imposing punishments, where a
section of society vehemently deems that death penalty is the only punishment
for such heinous crimes while some people emphasize that other measures should
be taken to deal with such criminals.
Apparently, various
reasons make a section of people advocate that the death penalty is most
appropriate for serious crimes such as murder and rape because if constitution
would spare such sinners it may encourage many evil-minded people to do the
same in future and it will be a mockery of the legal system. Secondly, if a
cruel person had killed or raped another person he also has no right to live.
Therefore, such criminals must be sentenced to death and majority of civilians
espouse this because they do not want to live a life full of apprehensions. For
instance, In December 2013, in India a girl was murdered, then the whole country
pleaded for capital punishment for the offenders.
On the other hand,
some people reckon that others measures could be taken such as lifetime
imprisonment or serving in the foster homes for juvenile delinquents due to the
fact that sometimes the innocent young people get trapped in such criminal
activities without any involvement. Henceforth is such cases the authorities
must consider other measures than capital punishment.
Moreover, in some
cases where someone gets killed during gang wars where both the parties were
equally guilty and the offender had no plan of committing such crime and it
happened only due the heat of the moment or by accident. For instance, In
Punjab, India a group of college students started with a minor argue and that
went to a major fight and accidentally one of the students was killed but the
judge sentenced long term jail to the offenders considering their background
was clean.
